Gifted & Talented
More Able Pupils Policy....
St. Anthony’s School wishes to enhance and develop the lives of all its pupils, in a truly Christian atmosphere, in full co-operation with parents.
For able students this means that they follow a curriculum that is sufficiently demanding and challenging to ensure that their particular abilities and talents are developed and extended, and that their learning is enriched. However, pupils are also encouraged to work in areas in which they may not be the most able.
There is also need to develop areas other than ‘giftedness’ in order to safeguard the development of the whole person, by allowing for spiritual, moral, emotional, social needs of each pupil.
The ethos of the school encourages and promotes high expectations and good relationships – good behaviour, courtesy, tolerance and respect for oneself and for others.
Although the more able and talented pupils can be defined in a variety of ways, we value the particular talents and gifts of each pupil. However, in order to comply with the dictates of the Excellence in Cities initiative, pupils are identified in accordance with DfES and LEA guidelines.
We look to the special needs of all children. All teachers of St. Anthony’s have some responsibility for more able and talented pupils, since provision for each pupil is a matter for the school as a whole.
It is school policy to strive continually to discover tried methods to satisfy the more able child’s academic needs, within and outside of school.
The pupils and staff of the school accept the policy of equal opportunities as set out by the City of Sunderland.
St. Anthony’s has a designated school co-ordinator, who liaises with a representative from each subject department to identify and monitor the progress of these pupils, who follow an appropriate teaching and learning programme, supplemented by enrichment activities. Each department has a member of staff responsible for this.
